Thorn

Thorn is dangerous. No body likes thorn, yet we might run into it sometimes, no matter how hard we try to avoid. That seems like an analogy to so many adversities in life.

The other day I was trying to use a wooden chopstick to grab some food and a 0.6-inches little string of the wood came out then got stuck in my finger. It hurts a bit and made me feel uncomfortable, mostly because it is there and that I can do nothing other than using a needle. Ironically, I was in an Airbnb without any first aid kit or home supplies, there was apparently no needle. I had no choice other than leaving the thorn there.

Overtime, the thorn gets deeper into my skin and then sank in totally. I had not much pain anymore since then. It left me a question that what if I just let the thorn be there, forever, unless I continue feeling pain? And you know what, the thorn just emerges into every cell of my skin and is a part of my finger now. It has learnt to live there within my body and so do I, with harmony.

Ever in life we face with uncomfortable situations in which we want to get out right away just like how I wanted to get the thorn out of my finger. Yet, what if staying a bit longer, we will learn something, at least, we learn to adapt to a difficult environment and to put ourselves out there to learn? what if problem-solving is not always helpful? what if resilience matters more?

Every solution comes with a new set of problems and so if we truly think thoroughly we need to bear in mind the consequences of every of our decision. Isn’t how adults are supposed to do?
