Color is an important part of a painting and it indeed makes us to understand the content more clearly. However, I personally prefer to sketch because it’s just simple. Simple to start, simple to do and simple to finish, with just a pencil and a paper.
Sketching to me is a way to visualize things in a raw and purest state. At that state, everyone is made sure to bring to the same page to enjoy its beauty. It’s also the biggest space for our imagination since we won’t be influenced much by the artist’s direction. A sketch is simply just a black and white visualization and it’s up to each audience to color it. Some people think black and white is boring but I think black and white is constant, concentrating and pure. If drawing everything back to black and white, the rest becomes less important.
With sketching, it is hard for both the artist and the audience to miss a detail. There is no way a detail can be hidden. It has to be there to make the object a whole. It’s interesting that when I used colors I was struggling with how to point out the detail. Coloring does not give me much space to do that. Nevertheless, there will be situation such as drawing a tree transitioning from summer to fall, color is a must. Without it, we may find it challenging if not impossible to express the changing color of the leaves. At the end of the day, it matters what the goal of the artist in his work to decide whether he should use color.
I am just an amateur but here are some examples of how a sketch and a color paint can be in my good use to express the objects.
